VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital Inaugurates “UMANG VATIKA” — North India’s First Sensory Garden in a Government Institution

By Vinay Mishra Delhi: 7 January 2026, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, today inaugurated “UMANG VATIKA – Sensory Garden”, the first sensory garden of its kind in a government institution in North India. The initiative is aimed at enhancing sensory stimulation, emotional well-being, & holistic development of children, particularly those with neurodevelopmental needs.

The Sensory Garden was inaugurated by Dr. (Prof.) Sandeep Bansal, Director, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, in the presence of Dr.Charu Bamba, Medical Superintendent,Dr.Geetika Khanna Principal VMMC, Dr Pradeep Debata Head, Department of Paediatrics.

UMANG VATIKA stands as a strong testament to effective Public–Private Partnership, guided by ASTHA’s vision of inclusion and dignity. The project was conceptualized and implemented by ASTHA, with financial partnership from R Squared Foundation, execution by CPWD, SJH, & design inputs from KILIKILI. The Paediatric Neurology Division, VMMC & SJH, served as the strategic facilitator for the initiative.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. (Prof.) Sandeep Bansal, Director, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, stated:

“The inauguration of UMANG VATIKA – Sensory Garden is a proud and meaningful moment for VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital. Being the first sensory garden of its kind in a government institution in North India, it reflects our commitment to inclusive, compassionate, & child-centric healthcare. Hospitals must heal not only the body but also nurture the emotional & psychological well-being of children, especially those with neurodevelopmental challenges.

UMANG VATIKA has been thoughtfully designed as a therapeutic & stimulating environment that supports sensory integration, emotional regulation, & holistic development. Such spaces play a crucial role in complementing medical treatment and rehabilitation.

This project stands as an excellent example of Public–Private Partnership, where vision, expertise, and resources have come together for a larger social cause. UMANG VATIKA symbolizes hope, care, & compassion. The Sensory Garden is expected to play a vital role in therapy, rehabilitation, & emotional regulation for children visiting the hospital, while reinforcing VMMC & SJH’s ongoing commitment to inclusive and humane healthcare.

The event attended by all AMS Dr Rekha Tirki, Dr Tilak Raj, Dr R P Saini , Ashok Pal DDA, Kailash Pal ONS, CSR Team & Dr Rachna Sehgal Incharge Peads Neurology division, Faculty and staff.
