Obra (Sonbhadra): In a heartwarming display of compassion, thousands of volunteers, BJP workers, and officials gathered at the Ram Temple in Obra to donate blood, marking the birthday of senior BJP leader Dilip Patel, president of Kashi region. The event, a powerful call to action by Rohit Patel and Rinki Agrawal, aimed to raise awareness about the critical need for safe blood and blood products in building a resilient healthcare system. Conducted by Anuj Tripathi, BJP zonal general secretary, the occasion saw the presence of distinguished guests, including zonal president Shivnath Jaiswal, district president Nandlal Gupta, former district panchayat president Amresh Patel, and Obra BJP in-charge Santosh Shukla.
Sarita Singh, a prominent Hindu activist and one of the donors, underscored the indispensable role of blood transfusion in healthcare. “Blood saves lives in countless scenarios—from mothers facing childbirth complications to children battling severe anemia, patients undergoing complex surgeries, or those managing chronic conditions like thalassemia, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease,” she said. “In emergencies, such as natural disasters or conflicts, timely access to safe blood can mean the difference between life and death.” Sarita, a founding member of Shri Ram Seva Samiti, highlighted a critical issue: many people, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, lack access to safe and timely transfusion services due to inadequate systems.
She urged governments, health authorities, and communities to invest in national blood transfusion programs, emphasizing infrastructure development, workforce training, and public awareness campaigns. “We need to foster a culture of regular, voluntary, unpaid blood donation to ensure a diverse and sustainable donor pool,” Sarita added. She encouraged individuals to discover their blood type, register as donors, and inspire others to donate regularly. “Every drop of blood or plasma donated is a precious, lifesaving gift,” she said, expressing gratitude to the hundreds of voluntary donors whose selfless acts profoundly impact lives, families, and communities.
The event aligned with the spirit of World Blood Donor Day, celebrated annually on June 14 to honor voluntary, unpaid donors. Coinciding with the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, who discovered the ABO blood group system, the day marks its 20th year in 2025. Supported by the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and other partners, this year’s theme, “Celebrating 20 years of giving: thank you blood donors!” celebrates the generosity of donors worldwide.
Saima Wazed, former WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, emphasized, “Blood transfusions are vital for maternal and childcare, complex medical procedures, and disaster response. Yet, in many regions, demand exceeds supply, challenging blood services to maintain quality and safety. Voluntary, unpaid donations are the foundation of a reliable blood supply.” The Obra initiative exemplified this commitment, with donors embodying hope and healing. Their contributions not only save lives but also strengthen the call for universal access to safe blood through regular, voluntary donations, fostering a healthier, more compassionate society.
