New Delhi, April 2, 2025 : On the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Safdarjung Hospital, in collaboration with Sushakti Charitable Trust, organized an Autism Awareness Walk to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from doctors, healthcare professionals, caregivers, students, and families of individuals with autism.

The walk commenced from Safdarjung Hospital and proceeded through key areas of the hospital premises, drawing attention to the importance of early diagnosis, therapy, and community support for individuals with autism. Participants carried placards with messages advocating for inclusion, accessibility, and the need for greater awareness of neurodiversity in society.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sandeep Bansal, Medical Superintendent, Safdarjung Hospital, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to supporting neurodivergent individuals. “Autism is not a disability; it is a different ability. As one of the leading public healthcare institutions, we are dedicated to spreading awareness, providing early intervention, and ensuring that individuals with autism receive the care they deserve,” he stated.

Highlighting the importance of education in fostering inclusivity, Dr. Geetika Khanna, Principal, VMMC, said, “Medical students and healthcare professionals must be equipped with the knowledge and sensitivity to interact with and support individuals with autism. Events like this walk are essential in fostering empathy and understanding.”

Dr. Ajay Gupta, Head of the Department (HOD), PMR, Safdarjung Hospital, stressed the need for multi-disciplinary intervention. “Autism requires a holistic approach involving medical, psychological, and social support systems. Through continued awareness and policy advocacy, we aim to create an environment where individuals with autism can thrive and lead fulfilling lives,” he remarked.

The event served as a platform to educate caregivers and the general public about the symptoms of autism, the importance of early diagnosis, and the role of therapy and support systems in improving the quality of life for individuals on the spectrum. By encouraging open conversations and community involvement, the awareness walk aimed to challenge stereotypes and reduce the stigma often associated with autism.
